TCL S4 55" Review: The No-Frills 4K Choice
Our Verdict
Solid basics at a great price
out of 5
TCL's S4 series represents the entry point for their 4K TV lineup, and at under $250 for a 55-inch set, it's hard to argue with the value proposition. With Google TV built-in and Chromecast support, the S4 delivers a modern smart TV experience at a rock-bottom price.
Google TV Integration
The S4 runs Google TV, providing access to all major streaming apps plus Google's excellent content discovery features. The interface helps you find things to watch across your subscriptions, and built-in Chromecast lets you easily cast content from your phone or tablet.
Voice control via Google Assistant works well, letting you search for content, control playback, and even control compatible smart home devices. For a budget TV, the smart features feel remarkably complete.
Picture Quality
The S4 delivers acceptable picture quality for its price point. 4K resolution ensures streaming content looks reasonably sharp, and basic HDR support (HDR10) is included. Don't expect dramatic HDR highlights or deep blacks—this is a budget panel, after all—but for everyday viewing, it gets the job done.
Colors are reasonably accurate, though not as vibrant as more expensive options. Motion handling is adequate for most content, though fast-paced action can show some blur. Overall, it's a perfectly serviceable picture for casual viewing.
